MISNet Macintosh System 8 Setup (Internet Setup
Assistant)
The fastest way to connect to MISNet using your Macintosh with
system 8 or greater is the Internet Setup Assistant. To start the Internet
Setup Assistant, double click on your hard drive icon from the desktop.
Then, you should see a folder that says 'Internet'. Double click this
folder. You should have a screen that looks like the one below.
Double
click on the 'Internet Setup Assistant' icon to start the configuration
process.
The first screen that you come to will ask you if you want to register
with a new ISP online, or to Update your current settings. Choose 'Update'
by clicking on the 'Update' button once.
This
will start the Internet Configuration process.
This will bring you to the introduction screen. From this screen, just
click on the right arrow on the bottom right hand of the window as shown
below
This screen will ask you what you want to name the connection that you
are about to create. In the space provided, type 'MISNet' (case and
form do not matter in this screen). Make sure that 'modem' is selected as
the answer to the question, "How will you be connecting to the Internet?"
Click on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
This screen will ask you what modem you wish to use with your Internet
Connection. If your modem is listed in the choices provided, please select
it by clicking on it once with your mouse. If your modem is not
specifically listed, check with the documentation that came with your
modem to see if an alternate choice can be made that will be compatible.
If your modem is not listed and your modem manual does not have an
alternate listing you can use, please contact us so that we may walk you
through setting up a null modem script for your existing modem.* Once your
modem, or a compatible alternate are selected form the choices provided,
please select the port that your modem is connected to (if you are not
sure, select 'modem port'). Once this information is entered, click on the
right arrow at the bottom of the screen.
* -
If you need to contact us to set up a null modem script for you because
your modem or a compatible alternate are not an option here, please have
the following information available for the representative that you speak
with:
- Your modem manufacturer
- The model number of your modem
- The maximum transfer (baud) rate of the modem
We will
not be able to set up your Internet connection without this
information.
Here, you will be asked to enter the phone number you wish to use to
connect to the Internet. If you are unsure of what phone number to use,
list of our current dial up phone numbers. Then, enter the username that
you chose when you signed up the account (for example, if your email
address on MISNet is mark@misn.com, then your username would be
mark). Make sure that for this screen and all screens after this that you
enter all information in all lowercase letters with no spaces. This
is very important. Then, enter your password that you were assigned when
you setup the account.
Click
on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
This screen will ask you if you have been assigned an IP address with
your connection. Since your IP address is dynamic (it changes each time
you connect), select 'No' for this screen.
Click
on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
Here, you will be prompted to enter the Domain Name Service (DNS)
information for MISNet. Enter the information exactly as it's shown
below. For the DNS numbers, enter the following: 64.240.20.10
64.240.20.11
For the domain name, enter 'misn.com'
(without the quotes) as shown below.
Click
on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
This screen will ask you for your email address as well as your email
password. Your email address is your username@misn.com. So, if you
chose the username 'mark' when you signed up your account, your email
address will be mark@misn.com. The password for your email is the same
password that you were given when you setup the account with us. All this
information should be entered in lowercase letters with no spaces like
shown below (substitute your information for the 'username' and 'password'
entries shown with your information).
Click
on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
This screen will ask you about mail configuration. The first box will
ask you what your POP account is on MISNet. For this field, enter
your email address again (username@misn.com) just as you did in the
last screen. For the second option, you will need to enter the SMTP
address of the MISNet mail server. This is 'mail.misn.com'
(again, without the quotes). Your screen should look like the one below.
Click on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
You will now be prompted to enter newsgroup server information. This
is the NNTP server for MISNet. For this field, you should enter
'news.misn.com' as shown below.
Click
on the right arrow as shown to proceed to the next screen.
This will complete the configuration for MISNet. From this
screen, you can finalize the setup and connect to the Internet, or just
finish the setup and save the settings by un checking the 'Connect when
finished' box. Either way, click on the 'Go Ahead' button to finish the
setup wizard.
After
clicking on the 'Go Ahead' button, you will see the following screen
telling you that your Macintosh is saving the configuration settings that
you specified.
If
you chose to connect to the Internet after finishing the setup, you will
then see the final screen that tells you that you are now connecting to
the Internet. If all goes well, all you have to do is open up your
Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and you will be able to
navigate around the world wide web, or you can click on the mail icon on
your desktop to send and receive email.
